Two More Pack Animals for the Caravan

I have been afraid to paint any of the World of Twilight miniatures from their first Kickstarter for far too long. I was recently looking for something else when I came upon the box of stuff from that Kickstarter. There are a lot of these cool pack animals but I was still wary. So I grabbed an Enuk and a Baruk to see how much damage I could do to them.

This Enuk needed to have some bright marking on his head. I like how the red turned out, it's probably got something to do with their mating dance. I went with red because of the Okroi stripes. They probably come from the same region. 

The Baruk is probably what really drew me to the Kickstarter all those years ago. The design just looks so great. I wanted to do something different with the coloring from the Enuk. Bright blue for the belly just seemed like it would be right. I really love the look of it and can't wait to paint another. 

Above we have these new pack animals with the Okroi to show how the fit together in a weird way. Below, the new beast handler stands with these new guys under his care.

And Here is the updated caravan with these new pack animals tossed into the mix. 

Someday, there will be more Enuk and Baruk painted up for the caravan, or maybe we need to start a second caravan?

The Hydra

 

This wonderful sculpt has been assembled and partially painted for some time now. Recently, I decided it needed to be finished so it wouldn't take up space on the painting table. 

I toyed with making each head different, but in the end I liked having them each be mostly the same. For the base, I wanted to do some resin water effects. They turned out passable, I think. I should've gotten crazy with it and done some crashing waves...

I love how the tail is reminiscent of the sea monsters on olde maps. I tried to choose colors that would look like an old style monster, I think it turned out okay.

Above we have the hydra playing with a couple of hoplites. Below, the hydra and a Beloved of Sobek get ready to rumble.

Finally, the Surfer Dude Demigod (of Poseidon) faces off against the hydra.

Repainting My Original Sphinx Abomination

Kestru-Toth has seen action in scores of games of WarGods across the years. He was one of the first Eater of the Dead miniatures from Crocodile Games that I painted (it was likely a lowly Horde Mummy that was THE first). With my recent painting completion of the newer sculpt, I decided it was time for my original Abomination to get a redo.

He was originally painted with metallic wrappings because I thought that would be cool.  It was okay. He was removed from his base and tossed into the  stripper for a few hours. When scrubbed clean of paint it was time to get him onto a new fancier base than his original sand flocked one.

His head came off from the stripper but those arms were apparently pinned like a pro because there was no wiggle at all. Kestru-Toth's original base was just my rocky desert flock. A sizable chunk of the rocky desert fell off over the years. Instead of fixing that I decided a total rebate would be best.

The new base is an MDF 40mm with some texture paste and my favorite temple base paper stuff. He seems to be much more stable on this base because no slot to constrain his placement. 

Since the new one got some dark pinkish skin, I decided maybe Kestru-Toth should match. So I worked up from a darker rose color to a muted pink after a wash over his desiccated frame. 

As I was painting him this second time, I remembered that this was a really great sculpt. I kinda want to find another one so I can do one with the alternate head. But who needs FOUR Abominations?

The bones protruding from his skin were not handled well the first time around, but I think I got them to look pretty good this time.

Now Kestru-toth is finished (again) and joins his fellow Sphinx Abominations to wreak havoc on the tabletop with a fancy new paintjob.

Caravan Leader and Beast Handler

Back to the Okroi Caravan with two more Dark Fable miniatures.

First we've got the Beast Handler with his whip. This guy is the most recent "found" member of the caravan, as I was looking through my Dark Fable miniatures hoard.

This guy has been partially painted since the caravan project became a project. The first part of him that came together was his zebraskin cape, it just seemed like the right choice. I thought of him as a former bandit gone mostly legit. I figured the two ladies in the caravan crew are his daughters and the Nubian guy was his old partner. None of them have names yet, but I'm leaning toward this guy being Carnac.

There are 4 more Okroi left to paint from the original plan, but I'm always looking for more things/people to add. Below is the current state of the caravan, 16" from lead ram to those bringing up the rear.
