Aegyptus August 6- Savage Aegyptus Shefdu and Mabuki

It was long threatened and now it is done- a version of Shefdu Sootootma as a barbarian. This is the Shefdu who became trapped in the Scroll of Savage Aegyptus. This lawless vicious land turned the young Scribe into a hardened warrior with a focus more on survival than his original quest for knowledge... Oh, and there's an alternate version of Mabukitoth-re (Shefdu's chosen student who became an Asar Harbinger of Thoth and has long been unfairly ignored in miniature even though he's part of the foundation of this blog) too. I thought it would be fun if the Savage Aegyptus Mabuki version was a wizard instead of a barbarian because in the original reality Mabuki's kind of a hothead tough guy.

The Mabuki Master of Words is simply a Dark Fable mini from the Temple of Set campaign. His fancy book might be a limited edition WarGods of Aegyptus, maybe...

On to the barbarian Shefdu, I've been holding onto this Reaper mini since it came out long ago. With a Tethru headswap it looks pretty good. The figure came on a detestable integral base that had to go but he's not totally secure. I wanted something on the base to spice it up, so it had to be a couple of scrolls rather than skulls.

Thus another Shefdu from the alternate scrolls of existence joins the growing ranks during the Crisis of Infinite Shefdus...

Aegyptus August 01- Young Shefdu and Asar Lady

As mentioned during the kickoff of Aegyptus April, the option for August has been picked up and it looks like several other WarGods fans are taking part in this one. So August begins with a conversion of a Young Shefdu and an Asar female who can fill many roles.

From Dark Fable (I think it was the Set worshippers campaign) is an Asar Priestess/Mistress of Words/Witch or whatever. She's a very nice simple sculpt and I think the color scheme lends itself to multiple roles on the tabletop.

I've gone on and on about Shefdu Sootootma in earlier posts here and there will be more of that in the future (Crisis of Infinite Shefdus is happening!). This is a long-awaited step in representing the origin of Shefdu as a young adventurous scribe.

Based on an Anubi Slinger, I chopped off the sling and drilled out the rock in his right hand. His bag full of rocks was carved out a bit for an extra quill and a rolled up scroll. The scroll in his right hand is a glue strengthened strip of masking tape (it's got a good texture for scrolls) wrapped around a length of pin.

To fix the gap where the Tethru head was mounted on the Anubi Slinger body I used a combination of some UV Resin and a couple types of texture paint. The hair in the back isn't good but it looks okay and I'm not going to fret over it because the overall figure turned out great.

I got this idea back a decade or more ago when I was encouraged to convert some Tethru Slingers from Khemru and Anubi bodies. This unit turned out really cool even though my sculpting skills on them were not great, except for the one that I sent to Alex Bates to paint for me- his hair is perfect (the one in the back left corner of the unit).

And here is the growing gathering of Shefdus from throughout the scrolls- the Crisis of Infinite Shefdus!

Archive 3.4 - Eater of the Dead Part 4 - Mummy Characters

The final installment of this look back at my giant Eater of the Dead Warband brings us the figures that make up the command units for the lesser mummies. Crypt Lords- heroes and champions in life with special powers making them formidable on the battlefield and leaders of units of lesser mummies; Necromancers- practitioners of the dark art of Necromancy who raise the dead to undertake the shadowy goals of the Eater of the Dead; and Dark Harbingers- in life they were great heroes for the living, now they've been brought back with memories of their life now twisted into service to the Eater of the Dead. Tragic.
Above is the Crypt Lord event mini from Crocodile Games.  Below is an alternate Dark Harbinger figure but he's only seen action as a Crypt Lord.  Both of these are unconverted figures from the Croc.

This Sebeki Crypt Lord  from Alex Bates is a cool undead version of the Crocodile Games mascot figure. I didn't like his axe so swapped it for the big sword.
Taking a break from Crypt Lords for a moment, let's look at those who make all these reanimated mummies possible - the Necromancers. Above is an unnamed Necromancer conversion apparently tainted by contact with the Eaterof the Dead. The body is an original Tethru Master of Words. The head is one of the alternate options that came with the Scarab Ogre and some very simple putty work to cover the gaps. His spear and some other bits came from various plastic GW kits.  Finally, his wierd bug-like left arms came from a Ral Partha mini.
The Necromancer above is simply a headswap on the official Crocodile Games Necromancer. The head was left over from the Reaper figure used as the basis for the Dark Harbinger, Shefdu Sootootma. This was the Necromancer figure used in the Golden Fleece campaign, 'Redface' (a subtle reference to the skullcace color because it's all about the subtlety).
The last of the Necromancers is actually the second painted version of 'Llithyiki' - the Necromancer for Shefdu during the Ankhara Campaign. This is simply an unconverted figure from the old Celtos line of miniatures. I still think she's a really great option as a Necromancer figure.

Back to the Crypt Lord parade with the named Crypt Lords. Above is the hippo-headed Sejetmu Dread Axe of the Nile. He's a headswap of one of the Warrior Mummy spearmen. Sejetmu was made the leader of the Axe mummy unit during the Ankhara campaign.

Above is a conversion of a Reaper mummy to give us Ashara 'Voice of the Tuat,' a Basti in life who had a golden voice ('the Voice of Honey'). She acted as captain of the mummy archers during the Ankhara campaign. Her sun disc was part of a standard (I think) while the bow and quiver came from the Crocodile Games weapons packs. A nice simple and effective conversion.

Below is the first of the first three Crypt Lords from the starting Ankhara campaign warband- Senshet 'the Mighty One' (because her Crypt Lord power was "mighty"). Just a straight up painting of the Crocodile Games figure. I don't remember what her scroll was meant to say, probably about "the Eater rules" or something like that.

These last two Crypt Lords (actually the first two to be painted) are Tebbi and Blackclaw. These were conceived of as criminal partners in life (check out their own skirmish blog which has languished for far too long for more info on their exploits) and Shefu's chief lieutenants in death. Blacklaw was able to steal at least one chariot during the Ankhara campaign- which probably earned him a Great Deed.

The Dark Harbinger Nabchuk the Nefarious is a slight conversion of a Privateer Press figure for the Golden Fleece Campaign. For that campaign I wanted a change from a mummy heavy Eater warband to a more Death Cultist heavy warband because I really wanted to have a Nekharu warband. That was a big difference. The conversion bits were the axehead (from one of the Heru Harbingers) and the head from a Nekharu Hero.

Starting out as a Crypt Lord in the Ankhara campaign (because you can only have one Harbinger in a warband and Shefdu was the star of that show), Hemati Shiver of the Lands (in life she was known as 'Protectrix of the Lands') was converted from a Stygian Priestess figure from the Chronopia line of miniatures. The backstory was that a young Shefdu Sootootma, bookish scribe before becoming a Harbinger of Thoth, was obsessed with Hemati's exploits as a Harbinger long before he was born. When Shefdu was raised as a Dark Harbinger he had one thought that lead his actions in the giant necropolis of Ankhara- to find Hemati and have her reanimated to fight by his side. Then after the big Ankhara finale, Hemati had slain enough 'breathers' that she leveled up to become a Dark Harbinger During the Heru-Typhon Civil War campaign as one of three different warbands I used.

The conversion was pretty straightforward. I removed the big disc at the top of her staff and made it into a poleaxe. The quiver was simply attached to her back as the shield was attached to her front. I used some strips of masking tape coated with thinned glue to make the remains of her wrappings.

Finally, the old bird himself, my favorite Harbinger for WarGods of Aegyptus (the live and the undead versions), Shefdu Sootootma Scribe of Khepri (previously known as the Scroll Traveller, the Scribe of the Dawn, and the Scribe of Oblivion). The early posts on this very blog are full of some narrative battle reports that also plant the story seeds of Shefdu and his former apprentice Mabuki-toth-re (my second favorite WarGods of Aegyptus Harbinger).

The conversion was pretty simple. I wanted a Tethru Dark Harbinger because they are my favorites of the Aegyptus setting. So I used a metal Tethru head from Crocodile Games and put it on a pretty cool Reaper mummy body. He needed a shield so I got a plastic one from GW that had an interesting shape and cut out a little piece of paper to be the tattered scroll. Sadly I don't recall what the hieroglyphs on the scroll are meant to say (probably part of Shefdu's treatise on the benefits of the use of a mace in combat over bladed weapons) but it's pretty characterful.

And that concludes this archive entry of the Eater of the Dead miniatures I've painted over the years. Over 100 figures (I keep losing count) and that's not even counting the Death Cultists (non-mummy followers of the Eater of the Dead) but we'll get to them eventually.

2 Objectives- Black Quill and Sword in a Stone

A Black Quill (Kekooee Seshket) and a magical Sword in a Stone...

The Kekooee Seshket have been mentioned before- magical quills created during the Aten Heresy. I figured it was about time I made one so that a possible campaign to collect the surviving Quills could at least be a possibility. The base is a resin 20mm scenic base that came with a Scibor mini.

Here we have a scene from this hypothetical campaign- Shefdu Sootootma challenging an Apophisphinx to claim one of the Kekooe Seshket.

This Sword in a Stone happened because of a broken plastic sword from the Wardame's Factory Amazons box. I lamented for about 20 seconds and then thought "hey it's like that broken sword Hellboy had that time-- OR I could have it sticking out of some kind of rock." Well the rock idea won.

The 'stone' is a chunk of foam that comes in many minis blister packs. I cut it so it looked vaguely stone-like and then slopped some glue and some liquid greenstuff on it to try to make it smooth. It's not so smooth. Maybe it's a meteor with a prize inside?

I think it came out pretty well for a spur of the moment project. It will be useful in several setting too.

Some figures to show off the size....

Ashara Voice of the Tuat- Recondite Cabal Crypt Lady

"When she breathed, Ashara was known to her Basti brothers and sisters as 'the voice of honey.' All that changed when she was awakened by the Necromancers. Her once beautiful voice now carries the torment and pain of the Tuat. To our kind it is still wonderful but the breathers are often stricken with paralyzing fear when she sings her haunting song of Tuat." -Shefdu Sootootma, Scribe of Khepri

Finally finished is the Reaper Mummy Chick conversion into a superior Eater heroine of the Second Battle of Ankhara. She eventually came to Shefdu's attention to join his Recondite Cabal.

Shefdu's Scrolls- Pandora's Box Finale

The Culmination of the Pandora's Box Crisis
OR
My Apparent Destruction in the Prison of Kronos

...thus Iodah, the Bes Hero of Kashik Oasis, and I raced through the cavern entrance downward towards the deep glow. As we travelled further below ground others of our Faction joined us from a branching cavern. When we neared our goal the cavern was filled with a bright flash of white light.

Our lost comrade Sakaris, ToTanem champion 'the Lion of Memphis,' along with a lost warrior from our newly arrived factionmates, appeared before us. Sakaris and the other warrior both sacrificed themselves to the ferryman so our warbands could cross the river to the Underworld. Both were now disembodied Ka, their will to continue to aid our cause took this quasi-physical form before us.

With our newly returned allies we entered a large cavern with several cave entrances and a large pool of roiling lava in the center. Two pillars of stone flanked a stone stairway leading up to a landing at the edge of the lava pool.

Standing on the landing with what was obviously Pandora's Box at his feet was the hulking form of the half-man half-Titan sorcerer, Xerxes. The Box lid was ajar with tentacles of some horrible monster writhing about from within. Around the cavern were numerous other entrances. Each entrance had disgorged members of either the Order Faction or the Chaos Faction (hereafter referred to as the “Minions of Xerxes”).

The fiend Xerxes addressed us all, gloating how we were too late to hinder his scheme. He had already begun the incantations which he claimed would assure him victory. His wicked laughter echoed through the chamber as members of the Order Faction, all great heroes from Hellas and Ægyptus intent on stopping whatever vile plan Xerxes had set in motion, sprung to the attack.

To my left, Sakaris blocked a Sphinx Abomination from attacking us. The ToTanem shade held his own for a moment but the undead monster swallowed him whole. Sakaris' sacrifice gave Iodah and I a moment to let loose arrows at the fiend Xerxes. Our shots had little effect because the fiend was protected by some sort of magical barrier.

Across the cavern I saw Abasi Benben, a Harbinger of Ptah, rush forward and unleash his Earthquake Ka power upon the closest pillar. Cracks appeared in the stone and dust and debris fell from the ceiling. A look of absolute terror flashed across the fiend Xerxes’ face. He screamed at Abasi Benben and aimed his staff. A burst of magical energy spewed forth and hit the ToTanem Harbinger with little effect.

Surprisingly a hand larger than a Sebeki splashed up from the pool of lava. It was then that I realized exactly where we were- this was undoubtedly the Prison of Kronos, the greatest of all the Titans. Kronos was imprisoned in ancient times by the combined might of the Olympian Gods in a secret place. Our struggle against the Minions of Xerxes immediately took on a more urgent tone. Abasi Benben‘s plan to topple the pillars was our only hope to keep Kronos safely imprisoned far from the outside world where the Titan would likely destroy all he surveyed.

Abasi Benben ran up to the pillar he had already damaged and let loose his Earthquake again. This time the pillar was destroyed and large chunks of rock fell from the ceiling as it cracked and buckled. The fiend Xerxes grew panicked and enraged, focusing a magical attack at Abasi Benben once more. I instructed Iodah to go to the aid of Abasi Benben while I would dealt with Xerxes. I called upon my Ka and flew to the landing where Xerxes stood directing his Minions against us. My struggle with the fiend was intense. I landed several wounding blows against him and managed to avoid his clumsy attacks.

Near the foot of the stairs I saw that the situation was growing dire for the Order Faction. Abasi Benben was now engaged in Provocation with a Dark Harbinger and the undead thing seemed to be getting the better of him. Nearby I saw another Tethru Harbinger engaged in Provocation with a Heru in the Aspect of the Defender whom had somehow lost his way to become a Minion of Xerxes. These sights distracted me from my struggle against the fiend. Unexpectedly Xerxes reached out with one of his massive hands and grabbed me.

By this time Kronos had emerged up to the waist in the pool of lava. Xerxes’ magics were too strong for me to overcome and I was tossed to the emerging ancient Titan.

I then found myself back in my library tent with the scroll I had immersed myself in still on the table in front of me….

GenCon 2011/ Pandora's Box Campaign Finale Part 3

And now the Finale of the Pandora's Box Finale:

Having lost my Harbinger in the most awesome way ever (better than the time DaveL's Harb was swallowed by that Abomination by far) all I had left in the fight was my Bes (Asar) Hero, Iodah. Unfortunately he'd spend the rest of the battle trying to make his Discipline Test to charge into the Titan on the steps.

Fitz reveals that Kronos is attempting to chomp on WHOEVER he can get his hands on. Debs is pleased that her evil Typhon Harbinger was able to avoid becoming a snack...

A Stone Colossus takes the fight to Xerxes. A valiant effort, but it doesn't manage to hurt him anywhere near as much as Shefdu did...

What's this? Pete's Tethru Harbinger has managed to best DaveL's Aspect of the Defender Heru Harbinger in Provocation? Meanwhile, Joe's heroic ToTanem Harb is locked in Provocation with a Dark Harbinger and he's not making any progress against the undead thing...

Fitz gleefully observes his malign machinations come to fruition as Debs takes a nice picture...

The Stone Colossus is defeated and falls into the lava pool...

A different ToTanem Harbinger manages to get to the remaining stone pillar and do a little damage. Pete's Tethru Harbinger gets into position to aid his brother Ægyptian with the power of Thoth...

Pete's Thethru Harbinger unleashes his Ka power Bolt of Energy at the pillar. Fitz dramatically figures the damage- and the pillar is destroyed! The cavern ceiling collapses in, killing everyone and re-imprisoning Kronos. But Xerxes, the architect of this whole situation, uses his dark magic to teleport to safety at the last second. That guy is really evil....

So the Tethru and ToTanem Harbingers played pivotal roles in saving the world from an Olympian-caused crisis.

One last shot of Shefdu's horrible/awesome fate. But the Scroll Traveller will return. He shan't be destroyed so easily....

Every time I go past the Children's Museum I have to try to take a picture of the dinosaurs busting through the wall. It's just so cool...
