Alien Pharaoh Statue

I think this piece was picked up at the Armorcast booth at the Origins convention in Columbus, OH sometime in the early 2000s. It has languished, partially painted, for almost 20 years until this weekend.

I finally decided I needed to finish this interesting Pharaoh statue. Is it an alien? Maybe it's just an ancient sculptor's idea of a joke? Or, is it just a cool resin chunk that will look cool on the tabletop.

I was bogged down with the panels on the back and sides. To get past that years-long hurdle, I finally decided to just paint parts of it and let a dark wash help give the illusion of detail on the parts that seemed too much to deal with. I think they came out okay, nothing fancy.

So how big is this statue? well, here we have a size comparison with some of the scatter terrain made for Ankhara skirmish.

And here we have some size comparisons with various minis, I didn't realize I didn't grab more WarGods minis for these comparisons.

Ankhara Necropolis Scatter Terrain

I've long pined for those glorious days of the WarGods Ankhara campaign and the aftermath of that epic finale at GenCon. A year or so ago, when I learned of the Necropolis28 game, I started musing on something similar with an Egyptian theme. When it clicked I lost my mind for a bit- Ankhara after the Rise of Khepri would be a  great setting for Mummy vs Mummy games.

I planned a fancy Necropolis board that has since been put on hold, but it would be cool to have a purpose built Ankhara board. Instead, I decided more scatter pieces needed to be made. I've got several pieces that will fit in nicely with the theme, but more is better.

This first smaller piece is on a 60mm base. It's got some skulls, a canopic jar from Crocodile Games,  and a sarcophagus top also from the Croc.

Next comes a couple of sphinxes from an old Kickstarter Egyptian-themed dungeon tile set. They were not as detailed as I had hoped, so the whole set has been in the original boxes for a decade or more. But these sphinxes were good enough to be damaged a little and block movement and line of sight. This piece is on a 100x80mm base.

There's a random mummy with its head in the sand to help spice up this piece, I actually snipped off the head and used it on the first base with the two skulls. A couple shields add a bit of color.

Finally, we have another 100x80mm base. This one has a single Sphinx on it, it could nicely serve as the objective for the "Riddle of the Sphinx" scenario. This base also got a pile of rubble with a sarcophagus lid. There's a fancy sword sticking out of the rubble and a rogue canopic jar.

These three pieces are hopefully just a beginning to a series of Ankhara-themed terrain. I want to use a few of those dungeon tiles that came with the sphinxes. I also have plans for a few raised areas to add a height component to the skirmish area.

Ankhara part 4

Finally, a return to painting Ankhara City of the Dead stuff. Mainly sarcophagi.

First, a simple obelisk from an Egyptian dungeon tiles Kickstarter that I've yet to do anything with. The piece are hydrastone or some similar material, so the weight adds up. I finally forced myself to put some washes and drybrushing on this obelisk because I wanted to see how it would turn out. Not bad but definitely not great.

Next come the last three Crocodile Games sarcophagi.

This Horus-themed sarcophagus has the same stacked 20mm bases option to give it some height. I had seriously thought of magnetizing all the kids, but decided it was madness. Maybe on the next batch?

For this open Anubis-themed sarcophagus I used a leftover Anubi head from when I converted my Tethru slingers. A little wrapping and we've got the proper sort of mummy for this one.

And the last sarcophagus has a tormented mummy in it. This and the Anubis one got soft foam offcut plinths with some texture paste. Both options worked fine, the foam option helps save 20mm bases, though.

Finally we have the Necromancer (or maybe a spell casting Crypt Lord) which is simply an olde Mage Knight Metal figure I've had for too long to remember. No modifications,  he was just right for the role.

Hopefully the next Ankhara update will attempt to contain the ferocity of the "new" Sphinx Abomination sculpt (it was released several years ago, I'm only now getting around to painting it).
